GTA 6 Extended Look: Everything We Learned and What’s Coming to Vice City

After years of waiting, Rockstar Games has finally given players their biggest look yet at Grand Theft Auto VI.

Released on August 27, 2026, the new GTA 6: An Extended Look runs for roughly 26 minutes and is captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5. Unlike the previous trailers, this showcase gives us a much better idea of how GTA 6 will actually look and play, from its massive world and detailed characters to combat, police chases, vehicles, robberies, and everyday activities.

And if the footage is anything to go by, GTA 6 could be one of the biggest open-world games ever released.

Welcome Back to Vice City

GTA 6 takes players back to Vice City, but this time Rockstar is expanding far beyond the city itself.

The game takes place across the fictional state of Leonida, with Vice City serving as its central location. From neon-filled streets and beaches to smaller communities, rural areas, waterways, and the Florida Keys-inspired regions, Leonida looks significantly more varied than the Vice City we saw in 2002.

Rockstar has also placed a huge emphasis on making the world feel alive.

NPCs aren't simply walking around as background decoration. People react to what's happening around them, interact with the environment, and respond to Jason and Lucia's actions.

Rockstar has previously said that GTA 6's NPC interaction systems build upon the technology introduced in Red Dead Redemption 2, taking character reactions even further.

That could make simply walking around Vice City feel much more dynamic than in previous GTA games.

Jason and Lucia Take Center Stage

At the heart of GTA 6 are Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, two criminals whose relationship is central to the game's story. Rockstar describes them as people who find themselves caught in a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida. After a job goes wrong, the pair are forced to rely on each other if they want to survive.

The Extended Look puts their relationship front and center. Players can switch between Jason and Lucia during the single-player campaign, allowing the two characters to approach situations differently. When they're together, switching between them can happen almost instantly. When they're separated, the transition takes longer.

This isn't a multiplayer co-op system. Instead, the second character is controlled by the game's AI.

That opens up some interesting possibilities during missions. One character might drive while the other shoots, or you might switch characters depending on how you want to approach a situation.

A Much More Reactive Open World

One of the most impressive parts of the Extended Look isn't necessarily the graphics.

It's how alive everything feels.

Rockstar appears to be building on the immersive systems from Red Dead Redemption 2 and applying them to a modern-day setting. Players can interact with NPCs, animals, vehicles, buildings, and various parts of the environment. Even small interactions appear to have received significantly more attention.

The showcase also demonstrated interactions with animals, including the ability to interact with a dog.

These small details might sound insignificant, but they're exactly the type of features that can make a massive open world feel believable.

Driving Has Been Completely Revamped

Driving has always been a major part of GTA, and GTA 6 appears to be taking it to another level.

Vehicles have much more detailed animations and physics, while crashes and collisions look considerably more realistic.

The Extended Look also showed vehicle-based combat and intense police chases, giving players a better idea of how dynamic driving situations can become.

Cars aren't simply transportation anymore. They can become part of the gameplay itself.

Whether you're escaping the police, stealing a vehicle, transporting illegal goods, or simply cruising around Vice City, driving looks like it will play a major role throughout the game.

Police Chases Are More Tactical

The police system also appears to be getting a major upgrade. Instead of simply spawning increasingly powerful police vehicles around the player, GTA 6 looks to make law enforcement feel more reactive and believable.

Police can react to what the characters are wearing, what they're carrying, and what they've been doing.

The Extended Look also showed intense pursuits involving multiple vehicles and helicopters.

This could make escaping the police considerably more difficult, and hopefully much more interesting.

Rather than simply driving to a hiding spot and waiting for the wanted level to disappear, players may need to think about how they actually escape.

Robberies and Criminal Jobs

Of course, this is still GTA. Crime remains at the center of the experience. The Extended Look showed Jason and Lucia becoming involved in jobs ranging from drug-related operations to robberies and other criminal activities.

The pair aren't simply following one linear path toward becoming rich criminals, either. Their work involves a variety of characters and criminal organizations spread throughout Leonida.

Some jobs also appear to allow players to make use of different skills and approaches.

From stealing vehicles to hitting businesses and escaping police pursuits, GTA 6 seems determined to make criminal activities feel more involved than simply walking into a location and shooting everyone.

There's More to Do Than Commit Crimes

One of the biggest takeaways from the Extended Look is just how much there is to do outside of the main story.

Players can participate in activities such as:

  • Basketball
  • Scuba diving
  • Boating
  • Kayaking
  • Racing
  • Parachuting
  • Swimming
  • Fishing and water-based activities
  • Exploring beaches and rural areas
  • Interacting with NPCs and animals
  • Customizing characters and vehicles

This is important because GTA's open worlds are at their best when players can simply forget about the story and go cause trouble.

Want to spend an hour driving around Vice City? You can.

Want to explore the waterways? You can.

Want to play sports, interact with NPCs, customize your character, or simply cause chaos?

That's what GTA is all about.

Character Customization Is Going Further

Rockstar also appears to be expanding the way characters change throughout the game.

Jason and Lucia's physical appearance can be affected by their lifestyles and activities, meaning the protagonists aren't necessarily going to remain visually identical throughout the entire story.

This builds upon systems that Rockstar introduced in previous games, while giving GTA 6 another layer of personalization.

Clothing and fashion also appear to play a much bigger role.

With Vice City being heavily influenced by modern Florida culture, Rockstar has created a huge variety of outfits, accessories, hairstyles, and other customization options.

Social Media Is Part of the World

GTA has always been known for parodying modern culture, and GTA 6 looks ready to continue that tradition.

Instead of simply parodying television, radio, and advertising like previous games, GTA 6 is heavily influenced by the modern internet and social media.

Leonida appears to have its own social-media culture, with viral moments, influencers, strange characters, and online trends becoming part of the world.

This gives Rockstar plenty of opportunities to poke fun at modern internet culture, something the studio is particularly good at.

The World Looks Absolutely Massive

Perhaps the most obvious improvement is the sheer amount of detail Rockstar has packed into Leonida.

The city contains dense urban areas, highways, beaches, waterways, suburbs, businesses, rural environments, and smaller communities. And unlike GTA V, the world isn't designed around a single large city surrounded by comparatively empty countryside.

Leonida looks like it has something happening almost everywhere. Rockstar's goal appears to be creating a world where players can continuously discover something new rather than simply traveling between mission locations.

What About GTA Online?

This is one area where players will need to wait.

Rockstar has confirmed the single-player experience and has shown a huge amount of gameplay, but GTA 6 Online has not yet received the same level of official detail.

That means we shouldn't assume that every feature from GTA Online will immediately return in GTA 6.

However, it's difficult to imagine Rockstar abandoning the multiplayer side of the franchise.

GTA Online became one of the biggest multiplayer games in the world, and Rockstar has continued supporting it for years.

So while we don't have a complete picture of GTA 6 Online yet, it's likely to become a major part of the game's future.

For now, Rockstar is keeping the spotlight firmly on the single-player experience.

What Can Players Expect at Launch?

GTA 6 is currently scheduled to release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not announced a PC release date.

That means players are now only months away from finally getting their hands on the game.

Based on the Extended Look, players can expect:

A massive open world: Leonida appears to be Rockstar's most detailed open-world environment yet. Two playable protagonists: Jason and Lucia provide two perspectives on the story and can be switched between during gameplay.

A deeper crime system: Robberies, vehicle theft, drug operations, and criminal jobs appear to be more involved. Improved combat: Gunfights, movement, cover, and vehicle combat have all received significant attention.

Smarter NPCs: Characters react more naturally to the player and the world around them.

More activities: GTA 6 isn't just about completing missions. There are plenty of ways to spend time outside the main story.

A more reactive police system: Getting a wanted level could become a much more involved experience. A huge amount of customization: Characters, clothing, vehicles, and other aspects of the game can be personalized.

The GTA 6 Hype Is Only Getting Bigger

The Extended Look has arguably done exactly what Rockstar wanted it to do: make people even more excited for launch.

After years of waiting, we're finally seeing GTA 6 as an actual game rather than a collection of short trailers and screenshots. And that's what makes this reveal so important.

We're no longer wondering whether GTA 6 will look impressive. It clearly does.

Now the real question is just how much there is to discover once players are finally given control of Leonida.

With its enormous world, two protagonists, deeper interactions, improved driving and combat, countless activities, and the return of Vice City, GTA 6 is shaping up to be one of the biggest gaming releases of 2026.
